Electric & Hybrid Vehicles Explained
Thinking About Making the Switch to Electric or Hybrid?
The future of driving is changing — and more UK motorists than ever are choosing electric or hybrid vehicles for their next car.
But with so many terms flying around — EV, PHEV, BEV, Hybrid, Plug-in, Range Extender — it can be confusing to know what’s what.
This guide breaks it all down clearly and simply, so you can make informed decisions about your next car, your servicing needs, or even your MOT planning.
What Is an Electric Vehicle (EV)?
An Electric Vehicle (EV) is powered entirely by a battery. There’s no petrol or diesel engine involved.
EVs are:
Zero-emission at the tailpipe
Powered by electric motors and lithium-ion batteries
Charged using home chargers or public charging points
Often silent and very smooth to drive
Popular EV models in the UK include the Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model 3, Renault Zoe, and MG ZS EV.
♻️ What Is a Hybrid Vehicle?
A hybrid vehicle uses both a petrol (or diesel) engine and an electric motor, working together to reduce fuel usage and emissions.
There are several types:
Type | Description |
---|---|
Self-Charging Hybrid | No plug-in needed. Recharges via regenerative braking. (e.g. Toyota Prius) |
Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) | Can be charged and run on electric alone for short distances |
Mild Hybrid (MHEV) | Uses a small electric motor to support the engine. Cannot drive on electric power alone. Often found in modern petrol vehicles like the Ford Puma, Audi A6, or Suzuki Swift. |
EV vs Hybrid – What’s the Difference?
Feature | Electric Vehicle (EV) | Hybrid Vehicle |
---|---|---|
Power Source | 100% battery powered | Petrol + electric motor |
Charging | Requires plug-in charging | Self-charging or plug-in (PHEV) |
Emissions | Zero (tailpipe) | Lower than traditional cars |
Running Costs | Lowest (no fuel) | Lower fuel consumption |
Range | Varies by battery (150–300+ miles typical) | Usually petrol/diesel dependent |
Best For | Regular local driving, clean air zones | Long-distance drivers, no range anxiety |
Why Are More People Choosing EVs & Hybrids?
According to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), around 1 in 5 cars bought in the UK is now an electric or hybrid vehicle.
Some of the biggest benefits include:
✅ ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) & CAZ (Clean Air Zone) compliance – Most EVs and hybrids are exempt or discounted. (Note: CAZs are active in cities like Bath, Birmingham, Sheffield and others outside of London.)
✅ Lower road tax – Or no tax at all for fully electric cars
✅ Government support – Expanding charge point networks and grants
✅ Quiet, smooth driving – Instant torque and low engine noise
✅ Lower fuel costs – Electricity is cheaper than petrol per mile
Looking After an EV or Hybrid
While EVs have fewer moving parts than a traditional combustion engine, they still need regular servicing — especially with:
Battery cooling systems
High-voltage components
Regenerative braking checks
Cabin filters & suspension
Software updates
