What They Do, Why They Fail, and How to Protect Yours

🔥 You don’t see it, you rarely think about it, but the catalytic converter is one of the most important components on your vehicle. It sits in the exhaust system and helps reduce harmful emissions — which is crucial for passing the MOT and for keeping your car road-legal.

In recent years, catalytic converters have also become a popular target for thieves, which has made drivers far more aware of them than ever before. But theft isn’t the only issue. Catalytic converters can also fail through overheating, contamination, and underlying engine faults — and when they fail, the symptoms can be subtle until the problem becomes expensive.

What is a catalytic converter, and what does it do?

A catalytic converter (often shortened to “cat”) is fitted to most petrol cars (and many diesels) to reduce harmful pollutants in exhaust gases before they exit the tailpipe. Inside is a honeycomb-like structure coated with precious metals that help trigger chemical reactions.

Those reactions convert harmful gases into less harmful ones, helping your car meet emissions standards. In plain terms: it’s a filter and chemical processing unit combined — and it’s one of the reasons modern cars are dramatically cleaner than older vehicles.
